Sarah’s responsibilities encompass multiple aspects of LINC’s work and she feels fortunate that this means collaboration with colleagues across the organization. A transplant from Southern California, Washington Heights has been her home for 40+ years; her activism as an involved parent led to serving as education liaison and Chief of Staff to NYC Council Member Robert Jackson, the lead plaintiff in the historic Campaign For Fiscal Equity funding lawsuit. Sarah had prior professional experience in fundraising, including positions with Planned Parenthood Federation, the national ACLU, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. When Sarah started at LINC in 2014, she was already familiar with LINC’s mission of creating a culture of reading in a community, instead measuring impact through individual test scores. This objective aligns with her lived experience as a public school parent in CSD6 and conviction that literacy is essential to a functioning democracy. It goes without saying that Sarah has loved to read since childhood. She has been part of a book group that has met monthly since 1993. She is proud to have passed a love of reading on to her children: one has teaching credentials and one is a children’s book editor. Now she also has the joy of sharing that passion with four wonderful grandchildren – the best excuse ever to indulge in choosing among the many wonderful, beautifully illustrated authentic story books available for kids today.
