A Moment of Gratitude: More LINC Very Involved Parents (VIPs) Are on the Rise

This August, LINC celebrated two new cohorts of Very Involved Parents (VIPs), dedicated caregivers from Queens and Staten Island who graduated from the program and are equipped to take greater roles in future of their communities.

The Queens graduates enjoyed relaxing music and painting, a meaningful moment of self-expression and an opportunity to slow down and be present. These VIPS expressed tremendous gratitude for being recognized for the volunteer work they have done—and continue to do—for their communities. They shared how LINC has helped many of them leave their homes, advocate for their children, and build a supportive community with other caregivers and a sense of belonging over lunch and laughter.

The Staten Island graduates were honored with a warm Mediterranean-style meal and a representative from Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton’s office, who presented citations to them for the important work they do each day. The graduations created space for caregivers to feel seen, appreciated, and connected while recognizing the important role they play in building stronger literacy communities for their children.

It was great being at the VIP graduation. Just went back and checked Mikael’s old pictures of us coming to programs. He grew little by little with LINC. You gave us a lot of input as of what we can do to make his childhood more memorable and fruitful. Forever grateful mom. – Kaveesha, Staten Island VIP

VIPs in The Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn are receiving additional training and support in preparation for their upcoming graduations as the VIP Academy continues to strengthen its infrastructure. The next academy will begin in November with a bilingual curriculum, a two-track training model, and a comprehensive parent leadership pipeline that extends from recruitment and training to ongoing professional development and alumni leadership.

Throughout September, LINC is offering the “Savannah Training” for VIPs. Requested by New York City libraries, the training prepares VIPs to support and lead literacy programs in library settings.

In October, PIX11 News anchor Dan Mannarino will facilitate a professional development session on public speaking at the PIX11 studio.

It is absolutely heartwarming to see our partnerships and volunteers in action, and we are excited to recruit even more VIPs in FY27.
