On Tuesday, July 16, Literacy in Community held its 10th Annual Reading on the Rails event with resounding success. We were excited and proud to be joined by two News 12 reporters, one with our families in Fordham and one with our families in East New York. Watch the clips and feel the excitement!
‘Reading on the Rails’ takes its literacy mission to the subway tracks
New York children and their families took part in the event, hopping on the subway with their favorite books and meeting kids from across the five boroughs who were doing the same.
The nonprofit Literacy In Community, known as LINC, took to the train tracks on Tuesday for the 10th annual "Reading on the Rails."
New York children and their families took part in the event, hopping on the subway with their favorite books and meeting kids from across the five boroughs who were doing the same.
"We do spend so much time staring at our phones,” said Kevin Raymond, of LINC. “We're trying to get kids, introduce them to the fact that reading can be fun anywhere, anywhere in your community can be a reading environment."
Kids met that message with loads of enthusiasm, telling News 12 all about why and where they love to read.
“It's fun for me to read on the train cause it’s so silent and I like reading in silence,” said one enthusiastic kid.
Parents tell News 12 that the summer months are ideal for building healthy habits like this because of how it helps avoid the "summer slump."
The kids and families rode the train to One World Trade to connect with fellow LINC readers for a full day of activities.
LINC is grateful to our sponsor, lovino, our partner One World Observatory, our guest author, Susie Jaramillo, News 12, NY1 Noticias, and all of our staff and families for making this our best Reading on the Rails ever!
